Handbook - Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanics is the paradise of the mathematical sciences.
- Leonardo da Vinci

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the year 2004 with the B.Tech program in Mechanical Engineering. In these two decades, the department has expanded significantly and continues to play a vital role in producing highly skilled and globally competent mechanical engineers. The M.Tech program in CAD/CAM was started in the year 2011. The department has a recognized Research Centre under Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad and facilitates Ph.D programs in Mechanical Engineering since 2019 with empanelled research guides.

The B.Tech program in Mechanical Engineering at IARE provides students with a strong foundation in fundamental and applied aspects of the discipline. The program covers not only the traditional areas of Mechanical Engineering, but also major emerging domains. Students gain solid knowledge in fields such as Thermal Engineering, Manufacturing Technologies, Fluid Mechanics, Design Engineering, CAD/CAM, Robotics, Automation, and Materials Engineering acquire hands-on experience through extensive laboratory work and project-based learning.

The B.Tech program in Mechanical Engineering was accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) successively for five consecutive terms in 2013, 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025. The period of NBA accreditation validity for the B.Tech program in Mechanical Engineering under Tier-I (Washington Accord) is up to 30 June, 2028.

The department has well-established academic laboratories such as Metallurgy and Mechanics of Solids Laboratory, Manufacturing Processes Laboratory, Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machines Laboratory, Applied Thermodynamics Laboratory, Machine Tools and Metrology Laboratory, Theory of Machines Laboratory, Heat Transfer Laboratory, Instrumentation and Control Systems Laboratory, Machine Drawing through CAD Laboratory, Fluid Thermal Modelling and Simulation Laboratory, CAD/CAM Laboratory, Computer Aided Numerical Control Laboratory, and Computational Mechanical Engineering Laboratory.

The infrastructure and laboratory facilities are upgraded regularly to provide an excellent practical learning and innovative environment for students and researchers. A MAKER SPACE is also established in the department to encourage students to transform their ideas into products. The department additionally houses Centres of Excellence such as the Centre for Automation and Robotics (CAR) and the Centre for Material Testing and Characterization in collaboration with leading industries and government organizations.

The students are nurtured with a variety of active learning activities including and not restricted to classroom teaching, presentations, video lectures, MOOC courses, minor / honors courses, experiential learning (Exeed), and online courses delivered by faculty in the institute and across the globe.

Skills and Competences:

Considering the potential expertise, a Mechanical Engineering B.Tech graduate should have at least four or more of the following competences:

  • understand the tasks involved in designing and developing mechanical components and systems
  • apply practical engineering methods and analytical techniques
  • use CAD, CAM, CAE, and simulation tools for design and manufacturing
  • analyse thermal systems, fluid systems, and mechanical components
  • operate and troubleshoot manufacturing machines, automation systems, and CNC equipment
  • conduct experiments, interpret data, and use modern engineering tools
  • have excellent problem-solving abilities, competence for individual work, and ability to manage sustained workload
  • think logically, creatively, systematically
  • possess well-based economic, managerial, and sustainability knowledge

Mechanical Engineering Students Technical Association (META)

The Mechanical Engineering Students Technical Association (META) is a students’ body for conducting activities on career development, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills of students. It organizes seminars, quizzes, industrial visits, paper/poster presentations, group discussions, guest lectures, career guidance sessions, coding/simulation games, etc. under its auspices.

Student Chapters of various professional bodies such as the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAEINDIA), Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and the Institute of Engineers (IEI) provide unique opportunities for networking, mentoring and bonding over common technical interests.

With an objective to help students pursue their hobbies and interests and to bring people together, various student clubs are created at the institute, encouraging students of ME to participate in innovative activities, design challenges, project competitions, and interdisciplinary technical events.

M.Tech (Computer Aided Design / Computer Aided Manufacturing)

M.Tech (CAD/CAM) is a two year full time post graduate program approved by the all India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) for the students who have B.E/B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering / Automobile Engg./ Metallurgy / Industrial Engg / Mechanical Engg. (Mechatronics) / Mechanical Engg. (Production) /Aeronautical Engg / Production Engg. / Industrial and Production Engg. / Marine Engg. / Mining Engg. (or) equivalent. The course is offered by department of Mechanical Engineering by highly qualified and experienced teaching faculty. Intake to this course is 18, selected by JNTUH through PGCET/GATE.

The Course offers core subjects like Advanced CAD, Advanced FEM, DFM, Precision Engineering, CFD, Numerical Methods, Advanced CAM, Industrial Robotics, DH&PS, FMS, Automation in Manufacturing etc.

A dedicated project work is taken up by every student for the next two semesters. The project work is of high-quality basing used in current industry practices. Project work is supported by leading MNC’s and defense laboratories doing state of art research and development.
