Aeronautical Engineering

Aeronautical Engineering remains one of the most fascinating subjects in applied science and engineering. On the other hand, as a nation, if we develop aerospace technology, other technologies are also updated proportionally. Aerospace engineers develop new technologies for use in aviation, defense systems, and Aerospace exploration, often specializing in areas such as aerodynamics, aerospace propulsion, aerospace structures, guidance, navigation and control, instrumentation and communication, or production methods.

The department of Aeronautical Engineering was established in 2000 with an intake of 60 and enhanced to 120 in 2008. Besides there are an additional 20% seats under lateral entry scheme. The department has grown rapidly ever since its establishment. The department started M Tech program in Aerospace Engineering with an intake of 18 from the academic year 2008 and increased to 36 in 2010.

B.Tech program in Aeronautical Engineering has been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) since 2008

The department has on its roll faculty members with good experience and training. The department is headed by Dr. D Govardhan, with vast research, industrial and teaching experience of 25 years. The Department currently has 34 faculty members, including four doctorates.

The department adopts advanced teaching methodologies like Webinars, case studies, seminars, group discussions, project works, assignments, quiz programs etc., which enhance students to understand real world problems and give support for their higher education and profession. Teaching aids such as LCD Projector, OHP, CD demo, equipment demonstrations, Models, Charts etc are regularly used to enhance better understanding. Around 18 students of each class are allocated to a teacher who keeps a close rapport with each student with regard to academic and personal matters.

In the regular time-table, five (5) periods are allocated for the enhancement of soft skills –  (i) Aptitude (ii) Seminars,  (iii)  Group discussions, (iv) Personality Development,  (v) Extra-curricular Activities,  (vi)  Ethics,  and (vii)  Career Development.  Expert Lectures from Specialists of the Industry and Academic Institutions are also arranged.

The department is equipped with advanced laboratory facilities with one serviceable airplane, Two Aero Engines, low speed subsonic wind tunnel, CNC and VMC Machines and avionics systems. Students are trained in these laboratories regularly by allotting suitable time slots in the regular time table.

The department has its own library in addition to the central library with 2000 titles, 300 volumes, Audio Visual Multimedia CDs, Conference Proceedings, Magazines and IEEE Transactions/Journals. Additional facilities like Central Computing Facility, e-Class room with multimedia facilities, Internet.  Centrally air-conditioned seminar hall/auditorium are also available. Students have the facility to access high speed broadband internet connection and a well equipped department library with 1190 Titles and on-line access to IEEE Journals and magazines. Students are encouraged to participate in national level conferences, present papers, and the department also frequently conducts workshops.

Aeronautical Engineering Technical Association (AETA) and ANTHARIKSH Aero Club are students’ bodies for conducting career developing, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills of students. It organizes Seminars, Quiz Programs, Industrial Visits, Guest Lectures, Career Guidance and Aero Modeling under its auspices. It’s an exciting place where, the faculty is friendly, well qualified and able to provide excellent supportive environment for the students to study.

The students from this department have won University Gold Medals in 2002 & 2007, achieved 1st, 6th and 38th Ranks in GATE-2012 with good scores and around 10%  to 15%  have gone for higher studies to universities like (Georgia Tech, University of Southern California, Cranfield University, Iowa State University, Virginia Tech,  Technical University, Aachen, etc), out of 10% are enrolled for PhD. Students are placed in Government organizations like DRDO, HAL, NAL, ISRO, and MNCs like Cyient, Infosys Technologies Limited, IBM, Tech Mahindra, Rockwell, Collins,  TATA Advanced Systems etc.

M. Tech (Aerospace Engineering)

M. Tech (Aerospace Engineering) is a two year full time post-graduate program approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) for the students who have a B.E / B. Tech in Mechanical / Aeronautical / Aerospace / Marine Engineering / Mechatronics / Naval Architecture / AMIE in Mechanical. The course is offered by the department of Aeronautical Engineering by highly qualified and experienced teaching faculty.

The course offers core subjects like Engineering Analysis of Flight Vehicles, Mathematical Modeling, Flight Vehicle Structures, Air Transportation & Space Transportation Systems and Computational Approaches for Structures & Aerodynamics.

A dedicated project work is taken up by every student for two semesters during second year. The project work is aimed at high quality standards used in current industry practices.  Some Project works are also   supported by leading MNCs and defense laboratories involved in state of art research and development.
