Experiential Learning (ExL) – Academic Success

“For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.”
— Aristotle, in Nichomachean Ethics

Preamble:

The primary goal of the Experiential Learning is to create a rich and wide-ranging portrait of the undergraduate engineering learning experience by offering multiple courses on experiential learning. Academic success course introduces multiple pathways to the student’s for acquiring the knowledge and skills, entrepreneurial traits which creates problem solvers for tomorrow’s world.

Introduction:

Academic success course creates platform where students experience a hands-on approach to learning about engineering. This course focus on educating the students about diversified platforms for learning the skills, career development, innovations, entrepreneurship, intellectual property rights. The knowledge of all these platforms makes the students to plan their career and create self employability. This course provides the students with strong insight into the importance of protecting an innovation's to confidently pitch an innovation. The course addresses the following aspects in curriculum:

  • Hands on - Students apply what they are learning about.
  • Integrated - Demonstrate correlations with supporting course work.
  • Multidisciplinary - Involve students as a community of problem solvers.
  • Teamwork - Emphasize the advantage of effective teaming.
  • Communication - Develop excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Entrepreneurial - Reinforce value-based engineering.
  • Contextual - Help students understand the big picture.

Course objectives:

  • Create awareness on academic pathways for building a successful career.
  • To provide an eco-system to work in teams and multidisciplinary problem statements.
  • Discuss the methods of implementing design thinking in the real world.
  • Explain the concept of idea pitching process for product and service development.
  • The attitudes, values, characteristics, behavior and processes with processing an entrepreneurial mindset.

Course Outcomes:

  • Know the importance of hands-on and minds-on learning through experiential learning.
  • Use the various platforms to develop knowledge and skills to excel their career.
  • Develop an ability to understand the problems from social, environmental and ethical aspects.
  • Analyze a social problem and differentiate between promising and non-promising ideas to solve the problem.

Mapping of CO and PO:

Course Outcomes Program Outcomes
CO1 Know the importance of hands-on and minds-on learning through experiential learning PO1
CO2 Use the various platforms to develop knowledge and skills to excel their career PO1
CO3 Develop an ability to understand the problems from social, environmental and ethical aspects PO3, PO9, PO10
CO4 Analyze a social problem and differentiate between promising and non-promising ideas to solve the problem PO3, PO4, PO9, PO10

Evaluation and Continuous Assessment:

The course is worth one credit hour with the contact time hundred minute session per week. All the sessions in every week is used for learning activities which includes understanding the experiential life cycle, different platforms for learning and practice, Innovation culture, entrepreneurial mindset and generation of innovative ideas through design thinking approach. It is recommended that the all activities are to be record on regular basis and proper documents are to be maintained by students and faculty mentor. The final assessment of course includes the idea pitching and report submission.
